It's Groundhog Day... Again
Have you ever seen the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray?
I just watched it for the first time about a month ago. My roommates here at the Content Crib always say “Man it’s like Groundhogs Day living with you!”
I never understood the reference but now I do and I love it.
Without spilling the beans, the storyline is that every time Bill Murray wakes up - it’s indeed Groundhog Day. Throughout the movie he meets new people, tries new hobbies but at the end of the day he finds himself in the same bed he woke up in.
When he wakes up, it’s the same day all over again.
And again. And again. And… again.
Although my two roommates might think the joke is on me.. it’s actually on THEM because I take it as a compliment! Living with me IS like Groundhog Day. It’s essentially the same day almost every day of the week.
You know what I call that?
Boring? Nope. Lame? Nice try. Repetitive? Ehh kinda.
I call that discipline.
It’s me cutting up chunks of my day to do what I need to do.
It’s me being my own accountability partner because I know exactly where I need to be and when.
Now I know me breaking down my day in a second is going to make me look like an absolute psychopath but I’m OKAY with that.
Stick with me, sound good?
*Deep breath in, deep breath out*
5:20AM : Alarm goes off. Let the games begin.
5:30AM : I’m getting dressed & ready for the gym. These weights ain’t ready for me.
5:40AM: I’m doing a 15 minute stretch / yoga warmup. Absolute game changer.
6:05AM : I’m walking in the gym. Sound the alarms.
6:45AM : I’m walking out the gym. Damn I feel good!
7:00AM : I’m double tying my shoes & hitting a 4 mile run. Let’s run it!
7:55AM : I’m jumping into the shower. Need it.
8:10AM : I’m meditating for 10 minutes. Stillness is the key.
8:25AM : I’m making breakfast. My tummy is rumbling.
8:40AM : I’m checking social media & drinking coffee. Double trouble.
9:00AM : I’m opening laptop to work. Time to CRUSH it!
1:00PM : I step away for lunch & read for 30 minutes. Knowledge is power.
2:00PM : I’m back for Round 2 of Crushing. I’m ready for war.
6:00PM : I’m cooked, I’m fried. I’m DONE!
6:30PM : I’m eating dinner. Same meals every - day - of - the - week.
7:00pm : I’m writing this blog post. How’s it so far?
8:30PM : I’m picking a comedy special to watch. Bert Kreischer is hilarious.
10:00PM : Lights OUT - time to pass out. ZzZzZzZz.
5:20AM : REPEAT!
First reactions?
“You’re legit a psychopath.” Ehh debatable but I’ll take it.
“You need to chill brooo.” Too busy moving & groovin’ baby.
“Your life is way too structured.” You’re not wrong but it works for me.
“You need to go with the flow more.” Not my style shorty.
& the list goes on and on and on.
Let me say I have NOT always been living like this. It’s only been since graduating college that I really started to schedule my life and maximize every minute of every day.
That’s how you become a top 2% Uber Driver - you make every minute count. The real ones know what I’m talkin’ about!
I’m not the most successful person in the world. I don’t have the nicest car. I don’t fly first class but one thing I do have is the ability to show up every - single - day and that counts for something.
I’m constantly learning & growing because life really is just one big ole work in progress.
We set our eyes on a goal or destination, we do what we gotta do to attain it and then we’re onto the next. Then the next and so on.
I dislike when I hear people make the excuse “If only I had more time.”
Don’t get me wrong - I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who are in certain circumstance where there really is no extra time.
They have three jobs, two kids at home and are barely making ends meet. You my friend are a hero. You’re the definition of work ethic.
But I’d say the majority of people that play this card aren’t actually aware of where they’re spending most of their time in a given day.
24 hours is a LOT of time if you think about it.
Bill Gates has 24. Warren Buffett has 24. Jeff Bezos has 24. Bradley Cooper has 24. Elon Musk has 24.
You get the point. We all have 24 hours in a day.
How WE spend it is on us.
Now it’s okay to slip here and there. My days are only this structured Monday through Friday and then on the weekends I let loose and try to ease off the gas a bit.
It takes time to find your rhythm and find a schedule that works best for YOU but the only way of finding it is by trying.
Trying to get up 10 minutes earlier than normal.
Trying to stay an extra 10 minutes at work longer to get the job done.
Trying to stay in the gym 10 minutes longer to hit your fitness goals.
Trying to call and talk to your old friend for 10 minutes longer.
There is plenty of time in any given day, it’s on us to spend it wisely.
Yeah my roommates might crack jokes about my disciplined lifestyle but I wouldn’t change it.
What helps me sleep at night is knowing I utilized every minute of the day. I soaked it all UP!
If I can do it… so can you.
Give a try.
